can you tell what kind it is from this picture? im thinking spotted bass, but i'm not sure. only other bass i've seen before was an adult florida largemouth and the colors don't match up.

thanks for the help!

most juvenile largemouth i see up here have a strong lateral band like the adults. this one is almost largemouth in color but the jaw does not extend beyond the eye. Could it be a spotted bass?

well that was my assumption at first due to coloration, but then i found this:

http://www.myfwc.com...SpottedBass.htm

Range - While widely distributed outside Florida, the spotted bass is restricted to streams of the panhandle from the Perdido River to the Apalachicola River. Abundance is limited in this area, but the fish primarily occurs in and west of the Choctawhatchee River.

that would put it out of range for where i collected it (Miami)...so what else could it be?

Looks like a Florida Largemouth although picture on my monitor is stretched. Florida largemouth of the southern Florida are more gracile as juviniles than Northern largemouth. The mouth is no as reliable a character with fish feeding mostly on pellets or invertebrate prey. As for coloration, the stripe can come and go according to mental state of fish or back ground it is trying to match.
