At Petsmart today, i bought two little pots of this. They were just marked "Assorted Potted Plants". I think (I am hoping) they are some sort of Vallisneria. Val. americana or Val. gigantea maybe? anybody have an ID?

It doesn't look like a val. Maybe a crypt of some sort?

I would say that that plant is Cryptocoryne retrospiralis too.

Crypts are nice plants, I think you'll like it. That one grows similar to vallisneria.

A few characteristics to notice that set it apart from Vallisneria: note the strong midrib on your specimen. Vals do not have any midrib. Also note the sort of curly/wavy edges that your specimen has. V. americana can sort of spireal around loosely, but doesn't have quite the same crinkly effect. Also, I can't quite tell from the photo, but your sample seems to have a sort of bulbous base? Vals don't have any real swelling at the base.

it doesn't seem to be doing so well in my tank right now... a lot of the leaves are rotting from the tip down.

Dave,

Have you got a nutritive substrate? Lack of nutrients in the substrate can cause the plant to have problems hanging-on. Also, what kind of lighting do you have, and are you fertilizing with CO2 or a carbon substitute (Flourish Excel)?

Given that it's a crypt, it could just be indulging in a meltdown as they tend to do from time to time, especially if you uproot them or change their environment in anyway. Never though of plants being drama queens before, but these plants really are in my experience. The leaves will all melt away but the root system will be fine and they should come back eventually.
