I am setting up a South American theme that will house a good number of characins and callichthids. I was wondering what species of Vallisneria are native to the Americas and are commonly sold online.
Thanks ahead of time,
Blake

I figured that one.
The main reason I asked is they often have non-native variations and plant farms often misuse scientific names. Sometimes they include jungle vals under V. spiralis and sometimes it gets its own species name. Sometimes V. americana is called jungle val too. I really shouldn't be so picky, I just like to keep a themed-tank from a specific region; fish and plants included!

good point. my relatively unsuccessful attempts with growing V americana suggests they require the standard recommended light level--or more. another contributor suggested they might require hard water (altho they're not listed as having a hardness requirement in one aquarium-aquatic plant book). you should be able to collect or buy online
