Biomass Position Posting

Buckeye Forest Council (BFC) seeks a qualified person to manage the initial phase of our biomass campaign to address the growing arena of biomass development at the state and federal levels. Applicant must be available and ready to start immediately. Position will require some travel.

This is a new project for Buckeye Forest Council. Since the expertise, resources and materials are in the early stages of development, it will be critical to keep key BFC leadership apprised of developments in this field.

There are already nine biomass applications pending before PUCO. Since opportunities for making an impact on state and federal legislation/regulation may arise at any time, it will be important to keep a flexible approach to developing strategies that are both responsive and proactive.

The successful candidate will:

1. Work closely with Buckeye Forest Council Board and staff in the development and refinement of objectives, specific activities and educational materials. Specifically consultant/employee will:

a. Help BFC leadership to craft and begin to implement a yearlong campaign to slow the freight train of biomass support and plant approvals and begin to implement a fact-based public education campaign.

b. Assess the specific tax credits, regulations, subsidies, and approval mechanisms that can be targeted most effectively.

c. Provide a product outlining the above referenced yearlong campaign that can be the basis for writing follow-up proposals.

2. Develop or enhance working relationships with other players in the environmental and energy development communities, including nonprofit organizations and government entities. These will include:

Ohio Environmental Council;
Sierra Club;
Ohio Consumers Council;
Ohio Farm Bureau;
Public Utilities Commission of Ohio;
Appropriate state and federal legislators;
Appropriate state and federal regulators and
Emerging state, regional and national partners.
3. Attend meetings of these groups and participate as BFC spokesperson on the biomass issue. This position will entail a commitment to oppose the use of woody biomass for generation of electricity and a commitment to end the subsidies and loopholes that discount the enormous CO2 emissions that result from producing electricity from biomass.

4. Develop and implement a statewide media strategy that makes best use of emerging news stories about biomass and provides opportunities to create news stories highlighting BFC position on biomass.

5. Meet weekly and provide weekly written updates to BFC leadership that relate accomplishments and challenges.

Skills and Abilities: Qualified applicant should:

Be a quick study. To receive federal incentives, biomass conversion plants must be permitted by the end of 2010 and be ready to go on line in 2012;

Have a good grasp of the state and federal legislative and regulatory processes;

Have had extensive involvement working in the nonprofit arena, experience working with grassroots groups a plus

Be capable of working in a high pressure but collaborative work place;

Have excellent written and oral communication and people skills;

Have a well-developed work ethic;

Be proficient with internet-based research and the use of commonly used office word programs.

Please send resume and letter detailing qualifications that meet all requirements to:
