Do female rainbow darters ever have color on thier cheeks and lower body? I beleived that I had immature males, but my colorful male is now chasing around one of the "immatures". It looks like love, not aggression.

I notice that fish collected in different spots look different. I have blackside darters from two different watersheds. One set is considerable darker than the other.

So, is it possible that my female rainbows have color?

I collected them near Lansing, MI.

Yes, female Rainbows can have color. The best way to tell the males from females is to look at the second dorsal fin. If the fin has "streaks" of color that extend from fin base to fin tip, it's a male. If there are "dashes" of color, you've got a female. Please see the attached PDF for an example.
