CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION


Classification Title: Head Camp Counselor (Seasonal)—Formerly Asst. Camp Supervisor
Classification: Recreation Worker II
FLSA Status: Exempt Service Type: Unclassified
Pay Grade: $8.50-12.50/hour Date: Jan-09

Primary Focus: Plan and implement and coordinate a specified program area (Arts & Crafts, Outdoor Education, Sports & Games) for all camp participants. Active role in organizing, planning, and implementing all aspects of the summer camp program. Direct responsibility for supervision and safety of camp participants.

Essential Functions:
1. Maintain safety and well-being of counselors and camp participants through the use of all camp policies as described in the staff manual.*
2. Model appropriate behavior to camp participants, camp parents, and co-workers as described in the staff manual.*
3. Model Recreation Service’s Workplace Expectations of having positive energy, trusting co-workers, being solution oriented, and having accountability.*
4. Plan and implement a specified program area (Arts & Crafts, Outdoor Education, Sports & Games) that meets program goals as described in the staff manual for the education and enjoyment of all camp participants.*
5. Maintains camper discipline as necessary, in an appropriate manner, to achieve camp objectives.
6. Assists in developing individual campers’ independence, self-esteem, and peer relationships in the summer camp environment.
7. Demonstrates enthusiasm for, and participates in, all camp programs.
8. Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.*
9. Assists with all-camp activities including playground, field, pool, and other assigned duties, assists with and participates in Friday afternoon theme programming.
10. Evaluates camp program and counselors and provides input to support staff and supervisors.
11. Abides by mandatory reporting policies as described in the staff manual.
12. Other duties as assigned (Frog Jump, 4th of July, Irish Fest)

Minimum Qualifications:
• Willing to work under direct supervision
• Ability to work independently
• Specific applied knowledge of program area (Arts & Crafts, Outdoor Education, Sports & Games)
• Ability and experience to lead and supervise others
• Preferred: Three or more years of college in recreation, education, or related field OR two or more years as a program leader in a specified area (Arts & Crafts, Outdoor Education, Sports & Games)

Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. for occasional facility operational/safety needs.

Ability to operate standard office equipment in performing essential functions of work.

Other Requirements:
Regular attendance, as governed by and in accordance with applicable rules, regulations, procedures and laws, is regarded as an essential requirement of this classification.

Compliance with training directives established by supervisory/managerial personnel.

Adherence to all applicable Federal and State safety laws, rules, and regulations and City safety policies/procedures.
