Raccoon Creek Water Quality Specialist Position Description

The Ohio Valley Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council is looking to
hire a full-time Water Quality Specialist to work in the Raccoon Creek Watershed
in southeast Ohio (Hocking, Vinton, Jackson, Meigs, Athens, & Gallia Counties).

This position is a joint venture between several entities that have a stake
in restoring water quality in Raccoon Creek and its tributaries including: Ohio
Department of Natural Resources - Division of Mineral Resources Management,
Ohio Valley Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D), the Vinton Soil and

Water Conservation District, The Voinovich School of Leadership and Public
Affairs at Ohio University, the Raccoon Creek Partnership (RCP), and the United
States Department of Interior - Office of Surface Mining. The Raccoon Creek

watershed coordinator will provide the day-to-day supervision of the incumbent,
and will work closely with the Water Quality Specialist to determine water
quality monitoring objectives, develop yearly sampling plans, implement and

coordinate water quality monitoring programs such as long term monitoring and
pre & post AMD project monitoring, and conduct project maintenance at existing
AMD treatment systems. The incumbent will also manage and enter data into the

online water quality database, provide AMD project development and grant writing
assistance, and perform other watershed related duties as necessary. Water
quality monitoring will entail both chemical and biological monitoring. The

Water Quality Specialist will also attend conference, trainings, meetings, and
events as necessary.

Minimum qualifications:
1. Applicant should have documentable experience (at least one year) in chemical and biological water sampling or equivalent educational experience.

2. Applicant must have a valid driver's license, be insured, and have their own
transportation. Mileage will be reimbursed for work related travel.

3. Applicant must have or be pursuing a college degree (or equivalent
experience) in a scientific field (biology, ecology, geology, hydrology...).

4. Applicant should be self motivated, able to follow directions, and posses good organizational and communication skills. Water Quality Specialist must be capable of working independently with little supervision as well as the ability
to work within a team setting, and

5. Applicant should have a keen interest in watershed management and sustainability.

6. Applicant must be able to physically perform job duties such as: carrying
heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs), walking long distances, traversing streams and
stream banks.

This position is currently funded through June 30th 2011, with renewal possible.

Employment is entirely dependent upon availability of funds for salary. The
position will be a full time (40 hours / week) employee of the Ohio Valley RC&D
at a rate of $12.00 - $13.00 per hour. Health benefits will be available.


Office location: Vinton Soil and Water Conservation District, McArthur, OH.
Estimated start date: March 8th, 2010.
