I was wondering if anyone has ever tried keeping amano or a similar shrimp with darters. I would imagine some of the bigger darters would harass them pretty bad but what about little guys like swamp, glassy, sawcheek, or iowa darters?

I have kept central grass shrimp (Palaemonetes kadakiensis), which probably average a bit smaller than Amanos, with swamp and slough darters. I never saw any negative interactions. Most of the slackwater darters have very small mouths; they might eat juvenile shrimp but adults and subadults would be safe. My guys couldn't even take female scuds (~1/2" long).

I know that bigger darters (bluebreast in my case) will chase and harass even full sized ghost shrimp (feeders from the local fish store). They have a hard time eating them... but they will bite and shake them. Haven't witnessed that behaviour with swamps, but they do agressively hunt anything that moves...

Oh, I see what you mean, slack water darters vs. slackwater darters. The latter is a federally Threatened species. But we're talking about darters in slow-moving water. Phew!

Thanks for the replies everybody! I may give it a shot if I come up with some good stuff in VA in a few weeks. I currently have 1 swamp darter I don't know what to do with. The obvious choice would be throw him in the planted mudminnow tank. However, when the biggest muddy in the tank makes a big yawn, my wee swampy could easily fit right in there.

And on a related note, how many slackwater darters could I fit on a cracker?

I had about 12 darters in my 75 gallon with several ghost shrimp. I had fantail, logperch, rainbow, and greenside darters and never seen any negative interactions.

Really? I would expect the greensides and logperch to shred those babies!
