I keep hearing these tales of finding bluefin killies and bluegills in rosy red and goldfish tanks. How do these fish get mixed in with these guys in the first place? Are the goldfish and rosy reds raised in a section of stream where these fish occur?

Most feeder fishes are raised in artificial ponds. Guppies and ghost shrimp are mainly raised in Florida, bait species like fatheads and golden shiners in the Midwest; I'm not sure about rosy reds, crayfish, and goldfish. Non-target species may be introduced to these ponds in any number of ways. I'm sure the managers do their best to eradicate large predatory fishes, but innocuous species like killifish are likely to thrive in the ponds.

It would be interesting to see a breakdown of "stowaway" species by feeder species. My observations are as follows:

Feeder: Rosy Red Minnows
Stowaways: Gambusia

Feeder: Guppies
Stowaways: Gambusia

Feeder: Goldfish
Stowaways: None

Feeder: Golden Shiners
Stowaways: Bullfrog Tadpoles

Feeder: Crayfish
Stowaways: None

Feeder: Ghost Shrimp
Stowaways: Bluefin Killifish; Seminole Killifish; Gambusia; Least Livebearer; Sailfin Molly; unidentified Lepomis sp.; Florida Bass; Swamp Darter; River Shrimp

I see bullfrog tadpoles with goldfish shipments all the time, so YMMV ;).

The others I would tend to agree with though.

When youre scooping up huge amounts of bait or feeders from large bodies of water whatever ends up in the net along with the target usually gets shipped. I used to get stickleback from a baitshop all the time from tanks of primarily fathead minnows or emerald shiners. I've also got tadpole madtoms with ghost shrimp and have seen juv. bullheads.

Here in the midwest, green sunfish a frequent contaminant in baitfish production ponds. Bullfrog, green frog and green tree frog tadpoles also occur. In upper midwest where some producers have ponds with poorly controlled connectivity with surrounding streams, Iowa darters and sticklebacks, are pulled as contaminants from ponds. Many baitfish producers harvest fish from ponds and hold them for some period of time in raceways. The raceways with baitfish often next to those with others species which can jump or accidently transferred. When baifish pulled for bagging or loading into hauling tanks, contaminants are not sorted out.

I got my green sunfish out of the goldfish tank at my local pet shop, and another time at petsmart, of all places, I found a non-green sunfish that I did not personally keep, so I never got it identified. might have been a dollar. I have also seen some really interesting crawdad species come in with the feeder goldfish at other pet stores.

Twice I seen golden shiners in a petco goldfish tank.

I wish I had interesting stowaways up here.

The ghost shrimp tank at my store was positively overflowing with natives today. Oodles of killies (bluefins and seminole), some mollies and guppies, tadpole madtoms, swamp darters and a whole bunch of sunfish.
