Is this potentially harmful?
Is their a way to cure this?
Yes, I do use live plants but lately my Fat Sleeper Goby has been destroying them.

An odd thing is happening with my 55 gallon, my water is getting a greenish murkiness to it. it merely looks like a slight green tint (at first I just assumed it was light filtering through an algea covered tank cover). But now I notice fish further back in the tank fade away into the green making it seem like some king of micro algea in the water.

As the others indicated this is phytoplankton (algae). What are your nitrates at?
