Does anyone know the specifics of growing paddlefish eggs? i have been offered a few fertilized eggs later this year and I would really like to raise a few to at least fingerling size from them. I am thinking of something like cyclopeze by the time they are big enough to eat newly hatched brine shrimp sized foods but what are they fed from the time of the yolk sack and being big enough to eat newly hatched brine shrimp? A few tips on hatching the eggs would be helpful as well if the info is available. i have tried google but no specifics seem so to be available. i would feel pretty good if I am able to raise just one from eggs.

There's a research group at Kentucky State University in one of their applied biology departments who work with raising paddlefish. They have published material on how to do it. I forget their names, but I'd guess it's possible to track them down.

Thanks, at least it's a start.

Check with Misouri Department of Conservation. The lost Valley Fish Hatchery has been raising paddlefish for years. Give them a call they should be able to help you.

Also right here on the Nanfa website is some basic information on paddlefish written by Christopher Scharpf. Here's the link: http://www.nanfa.org...addlefish.shtml While it's just a short article, it's more information than I've found any place else. Hope it helps some.

I found the Kentucky State people. Write to Steven Mims at steven.mims at kysu.edu and ask for a copy of his newly published chapter in a volume that's the published proceedings on paddlefish biology, "Paddlefish and Culture of Paddlefish", American Fisheries Society Symposium 66:357-383, 2009. Hopefully he has a .pdf of it.

After a significant difference of opinion between me and the egg source about the veracity of some NANFA members it would seem that I will not receive any eggs from the source mentioned. It's sad to see a persons who you look up to be trashed out of hand by someone who has no idea of the integrity of the person they malign. I would have liked to try to hatch out some paddlefish eggs but not under those circumstances.

Moon, that is most unfortunate. Some will always look down on us as "tropical fish nuts" who are looking for something "new and exciting". There are others who view nature as a strictly hands-off affair except for those they deem qualified to interact with it.

I would suggest mailing them a few copies of American Currents.

I'm a tropical fish nut looking for something new and exciting.  Seriously, I've wondered about paddlefish (or spoonbill catfish as some say), and I happened to notice this thread.  Can I reopen the topic?  Has anyone kept a paddlefish?  Are they even legal to keep in an aquarium?  Are there any commercial sources?  I would like to put a couple in my pond.  It's large enough that it might simulate their natural habitat.

Moontanman did end up getting some. Search the forum. The thread is a couple years old now, but if this one was still around there should be some info on here.

Moontanman, if you're monitoring this, I'd like to hear more about your experience with paddlefish.  Or, if anyone has had any experience w/ paddlefish, I'd like to hear about it.

Thanks, Moonanman.  I read the whole thread.  I was getting excited about maybe getting a few for the pond........until I got to the part where they were inhaling sunfish.  I may not be quite ready for paddlefish.  BTW, sturgeons were mentioned in the thread.  In my limited reading I understand the British like to keep sturgeons in their ponds.  Eventually, after I build a stronger, balanced population in my pond I might give paddlefish a try.  Interesting fish!  Did you ever get any more?
