As I may be doing more collecting in VA this year I would like to get a VA specific book. Does anybody have a copy of "Freshwater Fishes of the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware" by Rohde? If so, how is it? I realize that "Freshwater Fishes of Virginia" would be better but one is $90 and the other is $10. I'm looking for a guide to cover Shiners/Darters/Madtoms that may possibly show ranges and photos. Any suggestions on a good book at a decent price.

Check out the link... Fritz it our president... the book is great... he does a great job with it and even makes mention of some of the fishes suitability as a tank inhabitant... and it covers a good part of the eastern US, so is a good general reference.
I have the Virginia book as well and it is a bigger thicker reference type book... and you should not pay that much for it... it has been available at different times for much less than that.
I would say by Fritz's book now and keep shopping around on the Virgina book.

The cost difference is because they are completely different books. You will never find a copy of Jenkins and Burkhead for less than 100 dollars, unless you are an American Fisheries Society member, and if you do find it cheaper you should buy it immediately becasue that is highway robbery. Before it was reprinted copies were being advertised for in excess of five hundred dollars through book resellers. I would recommend the cheaper book if you are interested in the broad information on most species, but if you want detailed maps and a detailed key then get ready to open up the check book.

Spend a few extra dollars and get the Jenkins and Burkhead book if you can. Our book was never intended to be a field guide because we couldn't include photos of all the species (too expensive) nor good dot distribution maps. But then if you can get it for $10, get both. i may see a few pennies in royalties.

I'm not sure if our web guy put up the hi-res one or not, or maybe it was intentially left off.
It was intentional, the high res key is like 30 MB.

I got mine for I think $18 when University of Virginia Press was trying to get rid of the last few they had (based on a heads up that I got from a fellow NANFAn... I think through the old email list).
There are used ones on Amazon now for less than $100 and some for 4 or 5 times that, so there is a lot of variability out there.

I live less than 3 hours from VA and my mother's family still live in southwestern VA. I am over there visiting serveral times through the year. My grandmother lives in the Powell river valley, which is also really close to the Clinch River drainage as well. I will probably visit those drainages a few times this year, and wouldn't mind head farther east and/or north. I was hoping to sample in the Guest River (tributary to the Clinch) and see what is in there, anybody ever been in it?
I don't know what fish can be found in West Virgina but I'm also a few hours from there as well (being in central KY, I'm close to a lot of areas). I don't have any specific plans as of yet, but I wouldn't mind setting something up for some low flow sampling this summer over a weekend.
