Juvenile sunfish caught in minnow trap in stream below dam of small lake. Alexandria, VA.

im gonna say its a pumpkinseed sunfish, it looks similar to that of dsaavedras when his were young, and i think the red on the opercular helps. If its not a p-seed however, then i would think it would be a redear sunfish

I'd also go with Pumpkinseed. I think I'm seeing some spotting on the rear part of the dorsal fin and I do not believe redears have that spotting.

idk if this would help but i am noticing some irredecent bars behind the eyes extending to the gills

I am pretty sure that redears also have a mottled pigmentation on the rear of the soft dorsal as well. Although the fish is young, the more elongated look and yellowish belly and pelvic fins was hinting redear to me. But I think what will help (but is hard to see in the picture) is the length/size of the pectoral fins.

Redear sunfish aren't readily found in that area while pumpkinseeds are. I would say it looks like a p'seed to me.
