Has anyone ever started a Daphnia culture using ephippia vs free swimming daphnia? The Dapnia population at a nearby lagoon is collapsing leaving behind only large floating mats of ephippia.

"...large floating mats of ephippia."

That definitely sounds like something I would snatch up, regardless of anyone's experience. If you have the opportunity, I would try it, even if only for educational purposes.

Are the ephippia themselves of any potential use as food?

Im not sure. They dont seem very palatable to me I think they would be hard to digest.

It would be nice to find some use for them as they are extremely abbundant. I collected and dried some of the ephippia to be stored. Im hoping they will be like Artemia cysts, in terms of shelf life and ease of culture. I am going to tr and hatch some using defferent methods to test what works.

Here is a site that actually sells them with hatching instructions.

Hope this helps.

Good stuff! by all means do it up and let us know.
I've been thinking of trying some sand from the low spots in an intermittent puddle which gets daphnia when full.
Tempted to try fairy shrimp too but with all the pools I visit, I only know two that have reliable populations. That just makes them seem too rare to F with. Not to mention there is actually a protected species which could be found mixed in. They are cool critters though. :cool2:

Yes I have done so. For better hatching rates, place the ephippia in the back of your fridge for 4-8 weeks to simulate winter. Then hatch with rain or distilled water, NOT tap water!

It helps if the rain water you use is filled with free floating algae already.

Ken, the Alibaba site links mostly to non-US suppliers. I was looking there for ephippia and most were from China or Asia somewhere. Not exactly places with a reputation for quality.
