Not sure about the Greensboro NC date yet. possible
options are June 8-10, June 15-17, July 13-15 or July
20-22. early June is looking most likely.

-from Gerald Pottern

This was from late December and I imagine they will come up with a firm date soon so a bulletin will make it into the next AC issue.

I thought that it had been set as june 8-10... I think this was under the announcements section a while back? I just looked at it I guess it does say most likely it will be that weekend not that it is that weekend.

I haven't put in for vacation time yet, as I am waiting for the schedule to be firmed up. Just the same, it has to be understood that these things can take a while. I'm sure there are a lot of details to be worked out, not just making a phone call and making motel reservations for ___ many. Thanks go out to Fritz and Gerald for handling it. I patiently await the firm date.

Me to. This NANFA site is the best thing that has entered my life in a long time. I am so glad I stumbled on to it on the web. I look forward to seeing what that convention is all about. More so I am looking forward to collecting fish on that trip. The one and only one I want to bring home is Banded Sunfish. The other two are beautiful but I like things that people say are hardy and easy to keep. Species tank for sure on them.

I'm liking the early June. Especially if I get a thursday presentation for NABS in Columbia, SC. I could swing right up and totally justify stopping in Greensboro for the weekend. I knew I should have put that special request in for a Thursday time slot. Anyone heading that way early for some pre-convention activities? I'll already be in the general area and may or may not be able to attend (yet again) especially with the cost of NABS.

Considering Dustin and I are both in the Columbia, SC area, I'm pretty certain we can work something out. If nothing else we should be able to get you a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquariums at Riverbanks Zoo.

That would be great if we could meet up. I'm not planning on doing any of the technical sesions or activities at the conference, they cost way too much, so I was hoping to go out exploring on my own. I'd love to get a tour and see what I missed at that past convention.

Well since the dates have been cast... I thought I'd throw out a teaser.

This is the crescent shiner, Luxilus cerasinus. This is a terminal male, topping out at 3 1/2 inches.

It may be the perfect Luxilus for the home aquarium.

The good news... They're common as dirt :)

The bad news... I've yet to think of any.

I did fuss with blacking in the background, but that was it. I didn't think anyone really cared to see my printer and "Canon" in the picture. What's missing in the pictures are all the yellows you see when they flash dorsally toward you. You can sort of see the lines in the pictures, but it's nothing compared to real life and I couldn't get him to roll over when I hit the flash lol.

Needless to say... This is one sexy fish.

Don't even get me started on the Roanoke darters, Percina roanoka.

Well... Picture a gilt darter, except with a blue belly and will gladly take 80 degree water and flake food. Don't miss this Convention!

...and twice as big. This fish was in this kind of color at 2", which is what makes them so appealling.

Yes twice as big I know. I was trying to edit that in but sometimes my puter does not get along with nanfa and it jams when trying to do an edit. Yes that would be a cool fish to have if it is that color at 2" long. More than neat, cool. Did you have to condition him up with food to get him that color or was he just feeling sexy??

I always feed a mix of premium foods, so once they feel sexy, they turn on the lights.

This time of year is ridiculous as the tanks sit around 60-65 degrees for 6 months, which keeps them temperature conditioned anyway. In fact, I elevated the temp in the room last night, as the gilt darter males were tearing each other up, and I'm tired of them looking like blackside or dusky darters ;) Maybe that'll "cool" them off a bit. The recent winter that finally appeared, cooled the tanks down to 58 or so and then I turned on the heat where they went up to 62.

However, the crescent shiner always looks the most immaculate around 70 degrees, as with most of the other minnows.

If these fish are that good lookiong at such a small size, would you say that they are appropriate for a smaller office tank (like a 6 gallon eclipse)? Just a trio maybe?

They'd beat each other up, males are going to have spatial territories larger than that. But... This is a Luxilus you can get away with in 20 long.
