Well, I really don't know what I am doing but I am going to try to catch some darters at the creek near the house.

I have a small bait net and that's it so this should be interesting.

I will post pictures when I get back, probably empty-handed.

I caught two fish in my one or two hour long excapade.

Unfortunately they were trout fry (I believe one Brook and one Rainbow). Georgia law prohibits catching trout other than hook and line and there is also a size requirement.

So I had to release them, but I took a couple pictures. Enjoy!

Does Georgia stock trout as far south as Columbus? It would seem to be very marginal habitat even for browns.

No, nowhere near columbus. I am actually in Blue Ridge, GA right now (Appalachian Mountains).

Sorry for the confusion. Pictures in a bit.

Make sure you get your ID's down before taking any darters home. There are several protected species there in the Toccoa River watershed. Now that I think about it, there may be some regulations on keeping fish in trout streams in Georgia. But at the moment I couldn't tell you what is designated as 'trout' stream. That is worth looking up.

Will,

I checked the 2010 Fishing Regulations Guide (picked one up at the Chattahoochee National Fish Hatchery) and the stream I was in was not a designated trout stream according to the handbook. You are correct in saying that there are different/stricter regulations in trout streams.

I plan to print off a Darter/Natives do not collect species sheet. A sort of "what not to keep" cheat sheet.

A classmate of mine lived in Blue Ridge - we did some collecting on his land many years ago. Among other things we caught a Hellbender.

im not going to sound like a know it all....or a forum cop....but if you know that it illegal to net trout (ALTHOUGH we all have by accident but release on site)why did you then put it in a container...and bring it in what appears to be a house...that would involve moving it from the stream which it was caught. i just dont want you to get in trouble!! even though i hate trout regulations and such. please dont take offense at all...im not mad or irritated. just pointing it out in a nice way

That makes all the difference in the world... there is at least one really nice spot that I can tell you about over by 411 that is not a trout strean and has a couple of nice darters in it... it is the spot that Keith found that is right next to a park and has easy access to the stream... PM me if you are interested... or wait a couple of weeks and we may just come up that way with a seine and help you out.

I appreciate the concern. I wasn't sure of the ID and didn't think trout since it was not a designated trout stream. Once I got to take a closer look at them, I realized they were trout, took the pictures and immediately released them. The stream is within 100 feet from my house, so they were not out for long at all.

Hey,

I would love to know some more abou the spot. I am back in Columbus now, but we go up to Blue Ridge a couple times a month.

If y'all are ever up that way shoot me a PM and we can see if we can work something out.

Whats a good place to get a 4-6 ft seine (controllable by just me)?

Thanks,
Cory

I got mine from Jonah's. He has 6 footers in stock. He ordered me a 4 x 4 foot last year, I love it for sampling alone.
