Subject: Spring 2010 Richland Creek Re

Our first re-introduction effort for restoring the biological integrity of the fish community of Richland Creek upstream from Lake Junaluska in Haywood County will take place the second week of April 2010 (please see the attached pdf file).

Richland Creek is the largest tributary to the Pigeon River and like the Pigeon River has “come a long way” from what it used to be like. But they still need just a little more help from us. Through dedicated fisheries and environmental scientists from North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Evergreen Packaging, Haywood Waterways Association, Progress Energy, Western Carolina University, CFI, TVA, TNWRA, US Forest Service, US F&WS, NC Natural Heritage Program, NC DWQ, and many, many others (I apologize if I have omitted anyone), we have been providing that extra boost to the Pigeon River. We are building upon the very successful Pigeon River Re-introduction Program by branching out to the Richland Creek watershed. It may take awhile, but through perseverance and good science, we can be successful in restoring the fish communities of two waterbodies that I have worked on for more than 20 years.

We are seeking volunteers and partners to make this Richland Creek project a success. Your participation and assistance will be welcomed no matter how long you plan on helping us (i.e., half-day, all day, all three days, etc.). If you can’t make it this April, we will be repeating the effort in September 2010 and for many years to come.

If you would like to assist us this April, please contact Ed Williams or me. Thank you for your interest.
