I'm a new member from the far west - Hawaii. I stumbled across this site while searching the web for information on Sunfish. I've just finished setting up my large fish tank/enclosure that I using for my Aquaponic system, and I am looking for something to stock it with. Everyone here uses Tilapia as their stock, but I can't stand them, and I don't want to use them in my system. I was going to use some type of Sunfish, like Bluegill, instead of those horrid Tilapia. I've always had Bluegill in my Aquariums forever, and I used to obtain them from our one and only Reservoir, but there was a disaster a couple of years ago. There was an infestation of Salvinia that covered every square inch of the surface of the lake. In the process of removing the weed, the State used Roundup on everything, and it ended up killing all of the Bluegill. Now I can't find any, and I am trying to find a source that will send me some fry. It's funny how things work out, as I'd never thought that I would have to seek out and find a Bluegill source. Hawaii importation law is quite strict, and only certain types of Sunfish are allowed to be brought in. Thank goodness Bluegill, Pumpkinseeds, and Longears are on the OK list. Is there anyone out there that has any fry for sale? I've already obtained my permit. All I need is source. So far, I've contacted some Hatcheries, but none of them want to bother with small amounts of fish. Is there anyone who has fry for sale? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark I.

Mark,

Welcome to the group! I hope that you find your stay both enjoyable and informative! Sorry I can't help with the Bluegill fry, but I can point you to some information about using Bluegill in aquaponics. The book Aquaponic Food Production by Rebecca L. Nelson has a section on Bluegill and their requirements in an aquaponic system. I believe that you can get the book at http://www.aquaponics.com or http://www.nelsonandpade.com. Aquaponics is really neat and it's good to hear from someone else that is into it!
