I was wondering how you guys clean the outside of your aquariums, mine are getting a bit dirty and the glass could use a good cleaning. Are there any 'safe' chemicals I can use or any home-grown solutions? Thanks

I've heard of folks using a dilution of apple cider vinegar and water (something like 1-4 or so) - works especially well if you have hard water deposits on the glass top or sides too.
That said, I just use windex. As long as you don't spray the solution into the tank (just spray onto the hand towel) and use good sense, you're good.
I don't tend to worry myself over this type of thing though. I field collect limestone and just rinse before putting it into tanks. Other people I've talked to soak it, sun dry it, soak it, soak in in dilute bleach solution, bake it in the oven for 30 minutes, etc.
I just avoid collecting it downstream from a nuclear silo or combined sewer outfall.

I agree with Gene, I also just use Windex. I even wipe off my glass tops on both sides with it form time to time. Natives are tough. I have a feeling even if I were to purposefully shoot a spray of windex right into my 125 nothing would happen.(I would still never do this of course
)

I spray a mix of white vinegar and water on a paper towel and wipe em' down. Works great and is surely very safe. I never spray anything on or near my tanks.

Sounds about right, but you should use newsprint... it is one of the best glass cleaners around... a little more abrasive than paper towel and really cleans glass nicely

I used to work at a shop that used Windex on the inside of the glass popcorn bins. No one ever got windex poisoning. That I know of...
Also, coffee filters are a great thing to wipe off glass - abrasive and lint free.
