Last year I got a big box of water hyacinth from a guy in north georgia who was only able to find a few still alive after a massive dieoff. They did fine for me in my pool, but then this crazy harsh winter came. The pool itself broke and emptied down to only three inches, and the remaining water froze solid and stayed that way for about two weeks. When it thawed, I had a pit full of mucky mush.

Well, today I went back out there to do something about it, and to my surprise I have about ten young hyacinth plants alive and thriving. I really didn't expect that. Naturally they are having a feast on the rotten material around them, and that might explain why they are growing so fast. ( I didn't see them about a week and a half ago )

Anyway, this is probably very old news to most of you, but water hyacinth can freeze solid for weeks and still survive. Good news if you like hyacinths, I suppose, but bad news in every other way.

Yup, same thing happened here. I thought they were goners for sure but they hung in there. They have served their purpose and I don't really need them any more, but I was glad to see them come back. I was really worried about my golden club - I started the plants from seeds 2 years ago (this is their 3rd growing season) and they are really slow growers so I did not want to start them all over again. Actually, EVERYTHING survived except the Salvinia.

I've been saying for years that I've seen large rafts of water hyacinth growing in very temperate states. Still, people seem to think that their cold winters will control it. Or that drying and composting will. Seems they forget that it produces a gabillion seeds.
