Hi everybody,

I was out doing some fly-fishing and taking a much needed break from work yesterday. In addition to my non-native target species (Steelhead) I caught some nice looking Striped Shiner (Luxilus chrysocephalus) that made it obvious that they were in breeding condition.

As I was pulling this little shiner in, a large-and-in-charge Steelhead made an aggressive pass at him...giving away his location and making him easy picking;

A welcomed change from the ditches that I'm working in while conducting my master's thesis research.

Enjoy,

Nate

You should have quite a few of them in the streams around you. Get out with a seine and look for riffles in smaller streams (usually silt-free streams) and you should find them doing their thing.

I am getting my first seine this weekend! I am debating if I want to go with a 4' as it would only be me and one other person, or a 12'. I would find it hard to do with just me and my wife with a 12' seine, but who knows!

yeah id say the 12' may be a bit to much. is there a 6 foot available? its usually good to have 3 people. 2 for holding and 1 for kicking. i find it hard to seine around here because of the lack of people to help me....also there just isnt that many species im interested in. although i am hunting the banded sunfish currently.

With two people, you can likely use a 4'x8' seine without much of a problem. I'm not too familiar with the regulations in Wisconsin, but the largest seine allowed without a permit is a 4'x8' seine out here in Ohio. Make sure you check your regulations to stay out of trouble.
