I just took some photos of my fish and thought I'd see if I could get one to post. I brought these home from the 2007 NANFA in NC and keep them together in a 55 gallon tank. The crescent shiners are spectacular. I brought back 2 males and 1 female, and they are all still kicking. The males have looked like this the entire time. The female is somewhat less colorful and smaller. I would love to get some more sometime. I have 9 speckled killifish (brought 11 back - 2 casualties, but not bad for almost 3 years). They are somewhat plain. They are also fearless and will eat out of my hand.

Spectacular photos. Those crescents are unbelievable. It is nice that you have them in such condition while in and aquarium. Did they come into this condition on there own, or have you been mimicking photoperiod and temperature to trigger spawning?

I caught this shiner while fly fishing (catch & release) for trout in southwest Virginia. Never saw one before and it took a day (thanks to the interwebs) to identify it.

Speckled killie males can be quite lovely too, but I've never seen a good pic of one in color. Bright orange crescent around the tail, and blue-turquiose iridescent sides, especially in sunlight. But they dont look like that very often. Your pic is a female.

How far West in VA can a person find a Crescent Shiner?

They're introduced into the New, and are expanding their range westward in that drainage.

The farthest west shown in Jenkins & Burkhead 1994 Freshwater Fishes of VA looks like about 10-20 mi SE of Bluefield WV.

Do you think Rocky Gap VA may be a good place to look?
