I haven't seen resin driftwood ornaments over about 18" X 12" X 12" in size. Is there some reason you are avoiding real driftwood?

That's one way to do it. You can also make fake wood with insulation foam- polystyrene sheets and urethane expanding foam (e.g. Great Stuff). Just rough cut the sheets, glue them together and add any knobs or ridges you want with Great Stuff, then carve them down with knives, wood-burning tools, rotary grinders, sandpaper, etc. Then add a nice surface treatment of sandy and grout or silicone, weight as needed, and drop in the tank. It takes some time, but it's much cheaper than readymade pieces.

I ended up getting 3 pieces of the real stuff. The first piece i have floats, getting it to sink was a pain but that is now complete. other 2 pieces should arrive next week and hopefully they sink.
