I have collected several madtoms recently that I am unsure of the exact ID of. Specimens were found in Mississippi, more specifically in Kemper County and in the Tombigbee Drainage. They bleached out badly, there coloration was very dark upon being removed from the water intially. I am reasonably sure that they are ethier Black Madtom (Notorus Funebris) or Freckled Madtom (Notorus nocturnus). They have inferior mouths which excludes tadpole madtom as a choice and they lack the mottling in the fins that would be characteristic of Speckled Madtoms. Anyone have any insight? I can provide a complete list of Notorus Sp. found in Mississippi upon request if that would assist in IDing them. If I can get some positive IDs on these fish I have a few more juvenile madtoms that I am rather unsure of the ID of also.
