Pickerel ID

Alrighty just got back in...about to write up a trip report....but im still in search of my redfins...caught a huge chain today but im good enough now to ID them...the lil guys...not so much. i tried looking at the snouts. this seemed to curve down in was shorter....here are the pics....the ones outside are 3 different fish. i only kept one hoping it was a redfin..

first the chain i caught and ID correctly!!!

Beautiful fish... I really hope for your sake that it is a redfin as I know how much you want them!

i found this pic of a juvenile redfin on this site....mine sort of looks like it...so thats a relief...so far.

i know what you mean. I have a hard time ID'ing and I have several books to use! I remember growing up near the Wisconsin River, my brother and I would walk through the "dried up" sections of the river (where it would wash over sand bars, then dry up leaving small pools of water and TONS of fish...) and we would net little northerns, grass or chain pickerels, and we even had netted a couple baby muskies. We would then move the fish back to the main river so they wouldn't dry up and die. I couldn't tell them apart at the time (was like 10) but my brother could instantly!

I would agree that yours does resemble the picture posted! I am hoping once we move into a house I will get a 10' tank set up again for some redfins!

I think you chose wisely. I am not 100% sure, but the fish you kept indeed looks like an americanus. The others do look more like chains. I am only halfway decent at ID's, but I would have guessed as you did.

I would have been more happy with that chain pickerel. There is no regulation here (Delaware) on them, and they are extremely common, but I can't seem to find a juvie. My dream tank could then be realized... a chain pickerel and spotted (or florida) gar tank.
