I caught this in Lexington KY, does anyone know what kind it is. it was in shallow riffles

it sort of looks like a greenside darter to me. although i have no knowledge of KY darters. lil chubby guy too.

I don't know. To me it looks like it is a female of the Rainbow/Orangethroat group. Anyone else?

I'd say that Brian is right, can't see enough of the fins and peduncle to really say for sure.

Nearly positive it's a female Orangethroat (Thoroughbred) darter. Those are all over in Lexington. The males are AWESOME!
Hey Naturelover, where are you collecting at? I work in Lex/live in Richmond and have some GREAT sites around the area. Myself and a few others on here go out often in the summer and you're more than welcome to go along with us.
