Anyone got any ideas of natives i could put into a 29 gallon tank? something on the smaller end that i could start off with without having to much trouble. thnx

You can keep bigger sunfish like bluegills or greens in a tank that size, but even an overstocked tank that size won't hold many of those. Smaller species, longear and smaller, you'll get both more fish and more color in there.

I agree with Ed, a few smaller sunfish like longears would look nice. I have a 29g with a longear and 6 tadpole madtoms, I enjoy it a lot and if I can find one I would like to add another longear or smaller sunfish species.

you could go with even smaller species like darters and mudminnows. Iowa darters would be good is you are planning on making it a planted tank and you said your in wisconsin they should be in your area.

Smbass are those regular ghost/grass shrimp I see in the pic? Do any of your darters try to make a meal out of the shrimp? I was just wondering cause I was gonna do the same but seeing how they devour a scud I am worried to put my shrimp in the same tank as the darters..

as you can see from the picture iowa darters are not all that big compared to the shrimp, adult shrimp are about the same size so they seem to live together fine but I can imagine larger darter species would love to eat them. Iowa's are typically about 1.5-2" sometimes a little bigger, I have one female right now that is pushing 3". They also have a rather long and narrow body shape too them.

As was said, it really depends on the darter species and the size of the fish. I have seen a mostly full size (3.5 inch) Tourquoise Darter corner a feeder shrimp and eat it despite the fact that it didn't really fit in his mouth. On the other hand I have several shrimp that I thought were feeders avoid all of the fish in a tank full of darters and shiners, and live for months and months. Lots of plant cover probably helped these guys.
