Environmental Education Assistant at Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve

The Ohio Division of Wildlife (www.ohiodnr.gov/wildlife/) is now accepting applications for a part-time, seasonal Education Assistant position at Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve (OWC NERR) in Huron along Ohio’s Lake Erie shore (www.oldwomancreek.org). The OWC NERR is part of a state-federal partnership of 27 protected sites in the U.S. that promote stewardship of our nation’s estuaries through integrated research and education programs (www.nerrs.noaa.gov).

The successful applicant will join a team of environmental professionals that conduct research, education and stewardship activities related to Old Woman Creek estuary and other Lake Erie coastal wetland ecosystems and watersheds. The Reserve provides on-site education for students and the public including guided hikes and canoe tours, and hands-on training for citizens, community leaders, and professionals to support decision-making and actions that benefit wildlife and water quality. The program’s core focus areas currently include design and construction of interpretive displays and planning for local implementation of a national K12 education program.

Responsibilities:
2) Assist with development of communication and outreach products including displays.
2) Assist with logistics, design and implementation of estuary and coastal wetland education programs for the public, professionals, and students.

3) Provide trail, canoe, and facility tours.
4) Staff visitor center, answering public inquiries and orienting visitors to the Reserve.
5) Other duties as assigned.

This is a part-time, grant-funded position that requires evening and weekend hours.

Position term: July – November 2010, 30 hours/week
State classification: Conservation Worker

Preferred qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be motivated, self-starting, and have strong public speaking and writing skills. Applicants should have a strong background (Bachelor’s degree preferred) in environmental education, science education, environmental science, biology, ecology, wildlife science, communications, science writing or a related field. Formal K-12 classroom teaching, field-based environmental education, and/or experience in organizing professional development workshops are highly desirable. Proficiency with Microsoft Office required.

Candidate must meet all Conservation Worker minimum qualifications.
