I have 5 tanks. Two 55g, three 20g Longs. I have an extra 20g L but I have some fish that may need to move to the spare tank. One 20 is my feeder/grow out tank. Which has ghost shrimp, sucker fry, blacknose dace fry, and my rainbow shiner grow outs. My other 20 has 2 redfin pickerels, 1 chain, 4 mudminnows. The chain and 1 redfin will be traded. One 55 has all my bandeds and bluespooted sunnies. A few killis and a marginated madtom. My other 55 is a darter and dace tank. And now I have one empty 20L. Should I stock something new or shift some tankmates around?when my pickerel gets bigger I was thinking the mudminnows go with the bandeds and madtom. The growout tank is only till the rainbows get a lil bigger and my pickerel gets bigger and he can eat normal fish. Also can a redbreast live in a 20L for life by itself? Suggestions plz. Thanks

I suggest you get the mudminnows out of the pickerel tank ASAP. I can tell you from experience that a pickerel can eat fish very near its own size, especially if the other fish are terete like mudminnows are.

I haven't kept Enneacanthus sunnies and only have a little experience with mudminnows, so I'm not the one to tell you if that combo is a wise one.

A redear in a 20L would probably be OK, but I personally wouldn't do it. That's not much room for a largeish sunny, and if you add any other fish it will be quite cramped. Perhaps a 1:2 trio of one of the smaller Lepomis (humilis, marginatus, peltastes, or symmetricus) or a flier or mud sunny group would be better.

Ya I understand that about the pickerel but they are like 2" and the mudminnos are full grown adults. At this stage I'm more worried about the pickerel being eaten. But they are all well fed. When the pickerel gets a lil bigger they will be removed. I am looking to get some black banded sunnies a mud sunfish is something I'd want but don't know where to get besides NJ and aren't they special concern?

Pickerel often try and eat fish they have no way of actually being able to swallow, leaving a fish with terribly mangled head leading to infection. I'm with Newt...get the mudminnow out ASAP.

On a side note- I can't tell you how many times I've caught pickerel to have them cough up their last meal which is quite often a mudminnow or more if mudminnows are present.

My mudminnow has ate guppy fry, but the fish I keep it with (similar sized darters, sculpins, and minnows) do perfectly fine with them.
