I bet the bank has more to do with vegetation being there than the bank itself. I've found them more out in the middle, but my personal ditch is small (5 ft across) and choked with val throughout, so maybe they are just associated with the plants.

Yes, I think I catch them against the bank because it's easier to catch them, they have less room to swim off.

Yes, many of us use wild-collected plants in our tanks. Some have more success than others. I, for example, can't grow Valisneria, Anacharis, water hyacinth or Java moss. Generally you need strong lighting since the areas you'll be able to access and collect from will be shallow water and generally receiving fairly direct sunlight during at least part of the day. Also when using wild plants be aware of the area you're in. There have been many tales of people collecting fully terrestrial plants that had been temporarily submerged by high water levels. These will generally rot quickly if kept submerged.

Vals are what I want, are you inferring that I'll find vals where I find grass pickerel in NW Ohio?

You didn't mention that you wanted vals in particular, but there is a good chance. Val does tend to grow in similar habitats to those favored by pickerel (shallow slack water). I haven't seen val growing wild up north much at all, but then I haven't looked much. Natureserve does list it as occurring in Ohio at least.

I was thinking of ordering some vals and some moss for my driftwood, if I wanted to plant like 1/4 or so of my tank with vals, how many should I order approximately?

Hi Nathan,

I just got back from vacation and saw this thread. You might be stopping at the wrong ditch. We'll meet up on Thursday. I'll bring my seine and we'll catch more than you'll know what to do with. Like what was stated earlier, you'll be surprised what they can live in. Also, I saw another thread from you. Seems like you've headed to a different stream than what I suggested and came home with something different than you expected. I'll make a thread highlighting the differences between junvenile northern pike and juvenile grass pickerel. That mistake has been made here more than a few times.
