I had some of these captive raised from Phil that were 1 year old last summer, and witnessed them spawning over a dollar sunfish nest. I didn't find any young last year, but they survived the whole summer and I brought them inside for the winter. I have always been told that they die after spawning once and would not survive to spawn again as 2 year old fish. Although, they survived the winter... they went back outside with the dollars... and so far I found 4 young and still have 9 adults that look like they are spawning everyday. Here are some pictures of the 4 young I found so far. Hopefully there will be more.....

There are two year classes of bluenose shiners in the wild. Keep 'em coming!

I wish there were more NANFA members were interested in breeding native fish.
Especially members with experience with ponds, raising minnows, and spawning Dollar Sunfish.

Well, dang!
I did it the hard way, but you guys with ponds are just cranking them out nearly effortlessly! LOL!
Looks like I'm gonna have to set up a new pool or two myself.

My wife took some photos of them swimming around in the pond but I can't seem to find them at the moment. The 4 I pulled out of the pond seem to be doing great. I'll keep looking for more but don't want to drain the pond and do any harm to the several hundred dollar sunfish fry that are swimming around in there. Minnow fry are easier to feed in the aquarium than the sunfish...

These fish look like they are 6 weeks old already. 5/8 inch?

How big and how old are these fry?

Yes they are likely several weeks old and are about 1/4 an inch long.

Here are a couple of action shots from the pond...

You have to see them up close. I have yet to see any photo that does this fish justice.

Ain't THAT the truth?
Those who wonder what the big deal is with this fish can get a pretty good idea from these pics. The one shown at the tops of these forum pages is a sad specimen indeed.

Hey, I see you have the orangey-yellow ones. Nice. I've noticed that these come in two distinct color forms, orange-yellow and pure yellow, apparently based on either location or diet. Mine have always wound up pure yellow.

Hmmm.. question--were yours pure yellow until they spawned, at which point they turned orangey? Mine stayed yellow.

In other news, my quest to find them still present in Covington County remains fruitless.

I have these photos from when they were in color last summer. I should do the same with them now...

Very cool!

I got to see some of bflowers fry, and his set up in the fall. They were very nice looking. I would love to see the males in breeding condition at some point.

These fishes are beautiful and have interesting behaviour, like the sparring of the males in the small movie !, stunning,I enjoyed it a lot.

Brain,
Did you find any more Welaka fry in your pond?

I remember that years ago, Craig Watson got 300 eggs from one female that he induced to spawn with drugs.

You could have moved the adult Dollar Sunfish and adult Welaka into a 300 gallon pond. You have enough Dollar fry in your pond. Seining in the top 8 inches might have caught many Welaka fry. The Dollar fry will grow better if not over-crowded. How many Dollar fry do you realistically need?

I have been feeding Dollar Sunfish fry to my Fieryblacks
since I don't need 800 Dollar Sunfish.

I have not seen any more welaka fry but did move the adults into a pond with some actively spawning longears a couple weeks ago that did not have any fry in the pond yet. I haven't seen any welaka fry in there but there are now little longears.

I caught 3 Welaka fry from my pond just now.

So that is 6 spawns of Welaka with 6 spawns of Dollars Sunfish.

p.s. It is starting to get cold at night here.
