My basement has skinks and toads in it

Oho boy, that would be awesome/cool/fantastic/interesting/amazing/etc. but most other people would have a heart attack should that kind of herp set-up be even vaguely suggested! Might also want to throw in a few Smooth Green Snakes and/or maybe a puddle with Eastern Newts and Painted Turtles for good measure, ay? And don't forget to add a few (hundred) Gray Tree and Cricket Frogs! :D/

I have no problem with it, i think salamanders would do well down there too but they are kind of hard to come by around here... I've found a snake skin when I first moved in but I've never seen the snake...

I'm in the process of moving, i hope I do a better job this time with my remaining paddlefish. The new house does have room for an aquarium big enough for my paddlefish. Talking the boss into letting me build it and set it up is another thing ](*,) For those interested the paddlefish is doing well. he is eating floating Hikari pellets, ghost shrimp and guppies, one crayfish in his pool managed to survive his constant search for food and has grown large enough to be a nuisance. He doesn't seem to be able to catch rosy reds or kulli loaches. I am still enthralled by him and hope to have him in a 360 as soon as possible but for right now he is going in an outdoor vat. this time i am going to cover it with a wire screen to keep the predatory birds out. I am planning on renewing my fish breeding hobby when i get moved in, we intend to stay in this house long enough to breed some black bands and maybe redfin pickerels. Nothing more to report, life goes on :D/

Yay, please make threads on those when you do. There aren't many breeding reports available.

Sad news to report, during the move the paddlefish died. I was so very careful moving him, I set up a 360 gallon vat with a large filter and he did well for a couple of weeks but he and all the fish in the vat with him died, I found him buried in the leaves at the bottom of the vat. I'm not sure but I suspect the leaves were poison somehow. It is an odd tree, plum or peach, might not have had anything to do with it. I am devastated, I had him for over two and a half years, he was a beautiful fish and had come to recognize me as a source of food coming to the top to get his pellets. I learned a lot from him, awesome fish RIP....

Many fruit trees leaves (particularly cherry), produce cyanide as they wilt, and break down/

I'm sorry too I really enjoyed your updates and discoveries. You got me seriously considering a few paddlefish myself. I'd want to keep them in a 150 forever what do you think? Oh wait they're native to NY so I can't keep them anyhow. I gotta talk my wife into moving out of this state.

New York is part of the Mississippi river drainage? I did contact my fish and game people about the paddlefish and they didn't have a problem with it, i also have a letter allowing me to keep sturgeon as well. My paddlefish never got more than about 10 or 11 inches long but they are active, the footprint of the tank is more important than the height. I am planning on a tank 8' long and 3' wide for my next attempt, maybe 24" high. If I had the space i would make it 12' long but that is a bit impractical in my current house. They do like to swim into a current, if the tank was 2' wide and 6' long i can see them living quite well in it.

The Allegheny river in the southwest part of NY at one time had paddlefish. We have a recovery program at work to re-establish them.

Mike, surely that law does not apply to purchased fish with a bill of sale? How would a person stock his pond? I do not doubt the crazy of state laws though.

Nope, I was actually hoping you would beat the odds. I recently lost a nice bowfin, for reasons that are completely mysterious.

I am convinced that the key to keeping natives long-term is to keep them outdoors. They seem to be bulletproof then. Except for paddlefish :-(

Thanks, I do miss them, watching them feed on schools of feeder guppies was awesome, they also seemed to be pretty good at catching ghost shrimp and small crayfish but I never saw them do it, the shrimp and crayfish would just disappear at night...

Still wishing for that shovelnose sturgeon...
