This past weekend while poking around the swamp next to our house we found a snake that we thought was sunning, but turned out to be dead and likely frozen (had a frosty patch on part of the underside). Is this common? How would a snake freeze like that? Don't they search out shelter when it gets cold at night?

I would not say it is common but it is not unknown. Sometimes snakes will find a sun warmed area and then just stay on it as air temps get lower, eventually the temp gets low enough that they just do not move and then freeze. I've seen a few do this this winter so far, as we have had some nutty warm days and really cold nights.

Nice albino frog!!! If you find another can I have it? I'll give you some nice fish for it, or reptile. Whichever floats your boat. :)

Do you think you could breed it? I would definately buy some 100% het for albino tadpoles. :)

I have to ask, what kind of map turtle is that? Mississipi? I'm the proud owner of two adorable common maps.
Great little turtles!

This is not a great shot of the snake, but this is a queen snake that I found on the Ashtabula River May '07. They are a species of concern. We ODNR and Cleveland Museum of Natural History were glad to find it.

I love these pictures. Great thread!

Honestly we haven't had any fish around for a couple of years. We've moved a number of times over the last 4 years and the herps are so much easier to move than the fish. So the herps follow us, the fish don't. We're finally settled in and won't be moving again for a looong time and honestly it's been pretty cool having more herps around. Especially now that our oldest child is really showing a lot of responsibility in caring for them.

She's going to be turning 6 soon and she has a group of 1.4 African fat-tailed geckos. We used these because they are so gentle and tolerant. We initially got her a leopard gecko but it was returned to the store in 24 hours after it bit her and she was afraid of it. But she was not afraid of the big old male fat tailed gecko that we already had, so we got a baby fat tail just for her, followed by a few more. She has REALLY impressed me with how well she cares for them, so when she told me she wants a snake for her birthday I had to oblige.

I couldn't wait for her birthday, so she got the snake yesterday. It's a gorgeous pueblan milksnake (well at least it's a north american species anyway heheheh) and she has really taken to it. She got to feed him last night and the only thing we have to work on with her is not to hold it all the time; give it time to digest. Hahahha.

We do have some native herps that we've collected. A painted turtle and some type of (not ID'd) toad. Over the years we have had many more, including rough green snake, grey treefrogs, green treefrogs, chorus frogs (never again!), spring peepers, five lined skinks, fence lizards, and I'm probably missing a few.

Now that we're keeping frozen pinkies around for the milksnake, I'd like to maybe have some more snakes around the house. Something with a very even temperament that our daughter can old without freaking it out. I already know a black racer will NEVER EVER EVER see the inside of this house. (I used to work at a pet shop... bad experience with that snake!)

I was thinking... wouldn't it be nice to have a subforum for Native Herps under Other Related Discussion?

On the face of it, that might seem OT. However, since people often keep herps with their fish, that might be just as appropriate as the plant subforum. Hopefully Drew will consider it.

Yeah I don't see how it is any more OT than mussels or plants.

Herps & fish have always sort of gone together like peas & carrots.
