What do you feed helgies to keep them alive long term in an aquarium?

I have a big one currently but the ones I kept in the past all died.

Thanks

Have you tried grindal worms? They're easily cultured, small, and wiggly. They might be a good captive substitute for the insect larvae that helgrammites eat in the wild.

No I have not.

The one I have now was left over fishing bait.

Ahh Helgrammites my favorite river bait. If nothing hits a Helgrammite then there's nothing there. I've thought about keeping one or 2 but the feeding part stopped me. Well that and the fact that if my wife sees a Dobsonfly(Hellgramite in it's adult state) flying around our apartment she's going to kill me

Hellgrammites leave the water to pupate on land. Yours might have drowned if they were ready to pupate and couldn't get out.
Just guessing I'd say blackworms, small earthworms, and bloodworms should be good food. Or mosquito larvae if you crush them slightly so they helgies can catch em.

Just imagine if it were a male dobson. Have you seen the mandibles on them?! I'd love to see my wife jump when one of those fly by. My 4 yr old daughter would come to the rescue, she's not afraid of anything.
