Today I went out for a bit to enjoy the beautiful weather. A friend and I went to Wolfpen Creek. This is a small spring fed creek that flows into the Red River close to Slade KY. While walking the creek I saw many of these nests of Lampreys that appear to be spawning. The nests had from 5-15 Lampreys and it looked like they were moving rocks out of the hole and getting busy. We also caught Southern Red-Belly Dace, Banded Sculpin, Rainbow and Frecklebelly Darters.

Interesting. I was just reading about some locations very nearby here with chestnut lamprey (Ichthyomyzon castaneus). Even got specific coordinates. Maybe I should take a quick trip today to see what it looks like there.

I think they are Least Brook Lamprey. I think a few people have kept them, though from what I've read they aren't exciting as they stay buried in the rocks for years before coming out to spawn and die.

I kept one for a while - she must have been near maturity because she metamorphosed just a couple of months after I caught her. Then she died in short order. But yeah, the ammocoetes pretty much stay in the sand.

Great footage Josh!

As Martin said, the ammocoetes will stay in the sand and you won't see them. I had three that I'd throw in (think they were southern brooks) a tank and forgot about until I moved it. I would expect that they'd metamorphose the same and die. It'd be really cool to get some chestnuts or silvers and see what happens :)

They Metamorphose and then take out any fish big enough to feed on Todd..... :) Actually they will try for smaller if needed too or will reluctantly scrape algae.

I realize that. Maybe we define "interesting" differently ;)
