Fascinating info...thanks for going through great lengths to share your thought process about switching to kitty litter and showing us some great facts. I never knew it was so rich with nutrients and your tanks look great. I agree that a lot of atuff at the LFS are way overpriced. I remembered trying to buy sand for my shelldweller tank and the pirce was through the roof at the LFS. Went over to big box hardware store and picked up a 50 pound bag of playsand for $6 and it worked great.

I remembered trying to buy sand for my shelldweller tank and the pirce was through the roof at the LFS. Went over to big box hardware store and picked up a 50 pound bag of playsand for $6 and it worked great.

If it was aragonite oolite sand that could explain why. That's the one thing worth its money at the local fish store. Aragonite is calcium carbonate so it buffers the hardness of the water up. I've got 0 DH tap water so I use aragonite sand in my Tanganyikan shell dweller tank to raise the hardness and make the fish comfortable. Play sand is just silicon dioxide and doesn't have the same effect.
