This article is kind of lacking in the kind of info us fish freaks might want to know. So what is this really (By the way, thanks to Ken Glackin for posting this to the Percidae group on facebook): http://news.msn.com/...-rivers#tscptmf

Has it been described yet? Is there a binomial? Thanks!

Cottus schitsuumsh

Cool! Thanks! I'm going to have to look at this to see where that Latin name came from!

Glad I looked at the paper before I tried to pronounce it ...

Journal pg 253 (pdf pg 13): "Etymology. The word schitsu’umsh (pronounced s-CHEET-sue-umsh) is Americanist phonetic notation of the spoken word used by the first peoples who inhabited portions of northern Idaho and western Montana, now recognized as the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. In modern usage it means "those who were found here" and refers to the people of this tribe. The current distribution of C. schitsuumsh overlaps with most of the historical homeland of this tribe. "

Given it's origins, I really like that choice of species name; but boy howdy it doesn't translate into Latin too felicitously! Thanks for finding and posting its etymology, Gerald. I wasn't going to make it to p. 253!

I got this article in a newsletter email from Amazonas magazine. Apparently they've discovered a new species of sculpin here in the US.
