Any idea what species they are?

*both pics were taken at the stream where they were caught. One taken promptly after letting it go onto a rock, and the other in a cleaned out water bottle cut in half.

Looks like Virile / Northern / Fantail Crayfish Orconectes virilis.


Find ways for people not already interested in natives to value them.

I agree from my limited experience with them. It looks like Orconectes and it is not rusticus. Speaking of the one out of water.

 

Do you have two different species here though?

Could be different. I wouldnt know haha, still new to this stuff. They cam out of the same stream at the same time

I think your cray out of water is a different species than those in the water. Not even certain that we are correct about your main photo being virilis, but maybe the ones in water are O. immunis. I am completely guessing, but it may give you a place to start. That is part of the fun, trying to ID these aquatic critters.

It doesn't have every species, but maybe you can get it narrowed down to at least genus level.

Pictures of those in water are consistent with juvenile / small form II O. virilis.


Find ways for people not already interested in natives to value them.
