Starting in 2015 NANFA established the NANFA John Bondus Grant.  The grant is designed to support organizations that are working to conserve native fish populations, habitats, and knowledge.  This grant is intended to support current projects or ongoing efforts.

NANFA members in good standing will have the opportunity to nominate an organization to receive the grant.  The grant committee with review the nominations and make a recommendation to the BOD on how to award the funds.

Last year, we didn't have nominations because we had just started the grant and didn't have time to take nominations and make a decision.   The BOD voted to award the grant to Conservation Fisheries Inc.

The grant committee will take nominations from NANFA  members until January 31st of the award year and make a decision March 31st on how to award the grant. In return, NANFA requests public acknowledgement of the grant (web-banner, t-shirt logo, etc.) and details on how the funds will be used for use in an article in American Currents.

We are now opening nominations for this grant.  Nominations will be taken from NANFA members only and only one nomination per member.  Please complete the form in the link below.

This is a great opportunity for members to really interact and get the NANFA name out to local organizations.Give the board some great options to vote on and remember that if at first you don't succeed try and try again. I think this is very exciting!

Are we limited to how many organizations we can nominate?

One nomination narrows down my choices. (I rules out AVEO as though they do culvert removals for fish they focus more on birds and salamanders, and ruled out NH Fish and Wildlife just because the other competitor was a closer match to NANFA itself).

My Nomination is the Sea Run Brook Trout coalition. http://www.searunbrookie.org/

In their own words "We are not a fishing club; we are a science-based, grassroots alliance of academics, fishery biologists, ecologists, non-governmental organizations (NGO’s), and private citizens whose goal is the preservation and restoration of wild, native coastal brook trout in their historic range."

They are sort of a mini NANFA with a single species focus.

Thanks, sent. (sorry for the confusion, that is what I get for skimming, but not thoroughly reading the post the night before I posted).

Just a bump here.

Don't forget to nominate an organization.  This is your chance, as a NANFA member, to have us help those that you care about.

Not sure how many organizations have been nominated, but please add more. Give the board quite a few to choose from.

Here's the update from last year's winner

Also, members, this is very important.  This grant is where NANFA gets further involved on a local/state/national level.  We want to partner with like minded organizations to help native fish.  If you have an organization that is about helping fish, clean water, river restorations, etc...  PLEASE, submit them to us for this grant.  This is a chance to have your voice heard and get NANFA involved where you live.

Not only this, but it can get local groups into supporting NANFA. Maybe they did not even know we existed until they magically got a grant.

Hopefully it'd show them we are more than just the fish tank people.

Yes, I actually got this seeking speakers. Mentioning grants and Fritz's NOAA migratory fish restoration work usually helps, except for when they suddenly want to talk to Fritz.

I am gonna jump ahead to next year and throw a couple of thoughts out there. I think that this grant should be awarded to an organisation that has a philosophy in line with ours. If they don't support amateur naturalists such as ourselves, then perhaps there are other candidates whose interests have more overlap with ours. Like the Turkey Creek refuge.

We are nearing a decision.

And Martin, we have a weighted grading system and we take those kind of things into consideration when choosing a winner.  We'll have an announcement this week.

I won't jump ahead, but I gotta say, after the way they treated NANFA this weekend, I would support a conversation about Turkey Creek Nature Preserve as an award winner.
