Mike Howell, formerly of Samford University and known to many on this forum, was part of a group that found a new population of both rush and watercress darters in Cunningham Creek north of Birmingham, AL. Both species are Endangered. And almost as interesting, they were in the same creek habitat; rush darters are typically found in springs and associated spring runs.

Two of the three subjects of Darterfest.  I think Trygon got a picture of a Watercress in Turkey Creek

Great news on the discovery, and interesting use of drones.

Michael Wolfe has a project going to mount his GoPro on a drone, where the drone, which is fitted with floats, can drop 1 or 2 small anchors before landing on the water surface, then lower the camera into the water for underwater recon. (One clever feature is that if the anchor(s) hold, upon takeoff the drone inherently pivots to a position directly over the anchor(s), which (usually) causes the anchor(s) to release from the substrate.)

So far, an untethered "patrol version" has difficulty maintaining position on top of a strong current, especially if there is any turbulence at the surface. The video is too chaotic to make any sense of.

most of my video is too chaotic to make much sense of...

... and I see that you have been taking story telling lessons from the snorkelmeister

I do have an image of a Watercress Darter, in situ, in Turkey Creek.  Doug, two weekends ago, at the Snorkelpalooza, a doc candidate had a tethered underwater drone and it actually did pretty good in the current.

I read this article a few days ago.  I thought it was a cool use of drones.
