hello everyone!

I think my story is like a lot of others I see here. I kept wild caught as a kid and into college, and would like to get back into it and introduce my daughter to all of it, hopefully a bit better informed! That led me here. I'm actually brand new to NC and excited to find out what is in my area so I can start planning a new tank.

I've done some forum searching and Gerald seems to be the NC resource. he posted a while back the NC species maps ( RiverBasin Map NW-NC.std.pdf   but I can't get the links to work. maybe I need admin approval?

At any rate if anyone has thoughts on what's in my area that would be great, rainbow shiner etc. not sure what I can find around me. I have kept sunny Lepomis varieties before but am thinking something less aggressive and easier for her to learn on in a smallish tank.

I'd also love anyones take on the best tank setups / filtration systems these days for wild caught. We are probably going to need to be in the 50 - 40 gal range.

She's excited for this, really looking forward to the next steps and everyones feedback.

cheers, Kurt

Hi Kurt --  I guess you need to be a paid-up member to access those files, but here's the NC-DEQ's table of fish species by river basin:

Yeah, I suppose the French Broad basin might have a few marginally interesting fish species.  Did you see Tim's post about collecting in Fletcher?

Welcome aboard, Kurt! Glad to hear you're interested in sharing your fishy interests with your daughter! I have had some really enjoyable experiences with my girls (now 14 and 10) collecting and keeping fishes. Others here have as well. It's not just a boy's club, fortunately.

Welcome! I was just up in Fletcher two days ago collecting and had a blast. I will be spending a lot more time your way and if you want to meet up and collect together, let me know.

Thanks everyone!

Tim I just looked up your Fletcher post, those are fantastic!  What great fish.

I'd love to meet up, but with my daughter I wouldn't want to slow you down on a big hunt. Maybe we could join you for part of it if your willing? I'll try to figure out how to pm you so we can chat.

Oh your daughter wouldn't be a problem at all. I also got your email. That would be great, I will email you with a little more about schedules/etc.
