I didn't even know there fresh water lampreys, or that any were native to North America.  Very cool.

It looks absolutely alien.  Beautiful.  Thank you for sharing.

First lamprey. I will never forget mine. Have seen many since, but the first one was just awesome!

While I have only seen one, I too will never forget my first. It was so cool, I was giddy with excitement I didn't truly realize what it was at first. Weird how we get like that sometimes. Still don't remember the exact species I found, nonetheless, it was really cool.

What amazes me about lampreys is their complex communal nest-building behavior.  I just wouldn't have expected complex social behavior from critters so similar to Earth's first vertebrates.

That's what I thought at first, it looked like a worm to me then I realized it was a Lamprey. I know there are some spots around Raleigh that has Least Brook Lampreys, but I haven't gotten around to check it out yet.

Tim,

Fritz and I made a trip last year to a "secret spot" in the Raleigh area. There was a guy Fritz managed to locate via email, who has a population in a creek in his backyard. I wanted to go back this year to shoot some video, I'll let you know if I can get up with the guy.
