Hello all! You may remember that last summer I got four elassoma evergladei. Sadly...I didn't do well with them (probably wasn't feeding them enough) and now I am down to one female. Recently I decided that I would try again, this time with a 3 gallon all in one tank that happens to have a built in refugium. Could I keep scuds in that refugium? Any other live foods that would work? Thankx in advance :)

Hi! I would use scuds, black worms and ramshorn snails. You can also feed them BBS. Some individuals also eat frozen but i wouldn't rely on it. Frozen bloodworms and brine shrimps are usually accepted. It would really help if you could post som picture on the refugium.

I have 2 of the Elassoma, Okefenokee and Evergaldi and have found that live black worms, blood worms and grindal worms are the most accepted. i was able to get my tanks off of live and offering mainly frozen types. frozen baby brine i find is taken well by young and fry, black worms, blood and grindal are still their favorite. you may also want to add leaf litter. i find that i have more success in keeping fry alive. you may also want to consider a larger tank. my okefenokee's breed like rabbits and they are in a 12gl. my evergladi have reduced their breeding do to lack of "territory" and growing numbers and competition they are in a 5gl fluval spec.  grant it i also take the layed back approach and let them do their own thing.

hope this helps
