I’m making a 20L riffle tank and was wondering if a pair of rainbow darters, trio of Johnny darters, a fan tail darter with 5-6 dace ir sand shiners work in this tank?

I'd think that'd make a great tank.

Fantails are one of the more territorial darter species, just enough edge on them to make it interesting but not problematic. Bigger issue is getting food past the shiners. Turkey baster works great. The tank sounds good to me.

Okay, I might just cloud feed or like you said use a turkey baster. Would a 200 ghp filter and pump combo be too much?

No, but you may want to put a valve on it so that you can adjust it to what you and the fish like. You may like to switch it up to mimic natural events.

Might be pushing the stock but I’m curious about green banded darters or Iowa darters too, probably too many fish without the 2 new species? So a river manifold setup would be good with theses fish, correct? With the 2 powerhead and pvc pies while the other end has 2 sponge filters and return holes?

River manifold is good. I would stick with the original stocking list at least until you get a feel for the tank. You may feel that adding more species would crowd it. It is often easier to get fish than it is to get rid of fish.

Alright, I was thinking that and now that I look at all the stock I can see I have the color. Would the sand shiner or red belly dace be better for the tank, Or maybe 3-4 of each. Last what gph rating and type of pump would work?

River manifold is great, I love it on my tank.

I'd do the banded darters instead of the Fantail.  They have more color, and better personality.

For a 20L, what I would do is 2 Aquaclear 70s, as you can always scale them back with the flow adjustments.  Plus using the manifold you will lose some of the outflow, because they are also pulling water the length of the tank.

Stocking with a 20L, You'd be fine with those darters, and you could probably do 5-6 Dace and 5-6 Minnows.

So stocking goes like this:
Trio of rainbow darters (1M-2F)
Harem of Johnny darters (1M-3F)
Pair of banded darters (1M-1F)
Harem of northern red belly dace (2M-4F)
Harem of sand shiners (2M-4F)

Tank is a 20 long with 2 aqua clear 70s river manifold style with sponges on the end and an adjustable heater to give seasonal temp swings

Hardscape is “stream” rocks and a wood root with gravely/low sand substrate.

Plants are dwarf hairgrass and Val or chain sword

Custom stand and hood with college logos on each side. Inside the hood are 2-22” led lights.

Looks good, but you may not need the heater. What size pvc are you using?

I don’t have any yet, what would you recommend? And here is the wood I’m using for the tank, I know it’s too long but I can have it hang out or cut it and the two accent pieces

3/4 ovc works well. Is the wood already waterlogged?

No I got it today when I was “ice fishing” or more like drilling In 2 1/2 feet of ice with a hand crank to catch nothing. I still was outside and had fun

It wouldn't hurt to find a tub/container and start to waterlog it. Some pieces will never waterlog, one on my tank has been underwater for nearly 10 years and it still floats. What I did was attach plexiglass to the bottom with stainless screws and then buried that under the substrate. You can also weigh it down with rocks or something to be a little less permanent.

Also the river manifold is pretty easy, but here's some pics of mine on a 75 gal.

Thank you for the picture, that actually really helped me out! Now I think I’ll just weight the wood down or try to get all the tannints out. So far for my tank I will be spending the most money on the pumps and led lights.
