Can I keep a Pumpkinseed in a 55 gallon by its self?

Absolutely, you may be able to keep a trio if they get along well enough. Starting with young fish may help.

Bah Humbug, Sandwich says alone is better... close to 8 years now... and doing great in a 58 gallon show tank.

Thanks, I will be setting up my new 55 gallon and I really want a pumpkinseed because they look cool, are free and I don't have to have a heater.

If this is your first time keeping Lepomis, then a single is probably the smart way to go.

Id go big on filtration to be safe. Never hurts. Good luck!

I hope this doesn’t offend but how about keeping two or three Lepomis in an aquarium and eating them when they outgrow it? I keep chickens and I like them fine but I also occasionally kill one for the table.

I was actually thinking of that but the only problem is they come out of a very gross lake.

You could use a sponge filter. A smaller HOB will be fine. With a single sunfish there will be very little wasted food.

John - your tank will likely be better off with the additional filtration, however the 70 will work and you don't need a 110.  You also may consider how heavily you will feed, what substrate you will have, and how much and how often you will do water changes.  You probably won't have live plants with a Pumpkinseed so you won't be able to offset the mechanical filtration with plants.  If you already have the 70 then I would suggest that you stay with that for now and do more water changes.

Another option would be to consider a Penn Plax Cascade canister filter which is about the same price as the 110 and is much quieter (not sure if that is a concern).

Best way to go and be legal in public waters, but if you know of a private pond where you can be legal with a net, even better.

They are tough as nails... just bend down the barb on a regular hook, or file it off... Try to get one that is small, and young and growing (there is usually no lower size limit on sunfish in most places).  They are highly food driven and the mouth will heal quickly (if you catch him quickly).
