I caught a bout a dozen of the these guys in one of my fish culture ponds that is filled late in season.  Every time we fill ponds in July we get Narrow Mouthed Toads calling.  This is first time I actually captured the tadpoles and man they are weird and very poor swimmers.  I am trying to find out if they are Eastern or Western Narrow Mouthed toads.  Check out how little median fold they have on upper and lower margins of tail.

Dorsal aspect.  Nearly black from above.

Ventral aspect.  Check patterns.

Lateral aspect.  Stripes well developed on tail.  Beak already showing.

Breeding season about begin again.  Will see if we can keep the local department of conservation outreach display in these guys for the summer.

I figured out how to locate the elusive male narrow-mouthed toads calling around my ponds.  Also may have found why the eggs are so hard to find.  They breed major different that other frogs even after considering males sticking to females backs.  Major different!

So the glue is just half of it. Can't wait to hear the rest.

We used to have 'em in FL.  Funky little ant eatin' critters.  If you found and ant hill that had some damp/rotting wood next to it there was a good chance that a narrowmouth was camped out under it!

Frogs are really neat creatures, thanks for posting, and like DLV said, can't wait to hear the rest.

Anyone have picture of Narrow-mouthed Toad egg mass?  We are trying to find them in a culture pond loaded with singling males but have not found any clutches as of yet.
