I'm working on stocking for a 300 wide and was hoping for some help.

I mainly want a large group of longear. However I would love to keep a variety of the following if possible. I'm not sure on numbers or even if they'll work together.

Bluegill
Spotted
Pumpkin seed
Longear
Green
Dollar
Then maybe a bullhead or similar.

I would omit the Pumpkinseed if working the more southern species or subspecies found in AL.  You have some really pretty Longears in your state.

I wasn't planning on southern specific, but that's an idea. I agree AL has some beautiful natives.

It is definitely doable with the species you've listed. I've done it in the past on a smaller scale with 5 different Lepomis species in a 110. Right now I just have Orangespots, Bantams and Flier.

Make sure to provide lots and lots of structure and "overstock" a bit to mitigate aggression. I would think 15-20 fish would be the minimum number for a tank that size, quite possibly more depending on how things go.

Good luck.

Wont beat the dead horse any more than what others have said other than to say it should work. Youll find a good balance. But have an outlet for fish that get picked on and may need to be permentely removed. I.E. another tank.

Of course we would all love to see this tank as it comes together if youd be kind enough to take pictures along the way. Big display tanks of that size are more of a rarity.

We may need to consider eating all fish not intended for future use.

After doing some looking around to start I was thinking

Central longear x15
Bluegill x 8
Dollar x10
Bullhead x2

I think that mix should work. I'd start with smaller/juvenile fish and you can always cull a few out later if needed once they get bigger.

Might also consider adding some of the larger/tougher shiner species native to your region to the mix. Might give the tank some pop.

Post some pics later if you can once everything is up and running. Good luck.

Thanks for that. I've been looking at chubs and smaller suckers today

Its not going to be an overnight process, but the available sizes are so tiny I was going to start growing some out here soon.

I have a downstairs room to wire and finish up. I've been looking at tanks on fb, but haven't found one with the dimensions I want yet.

Ill throw some progress pictures up once I get some things started

Sure I'll take pics. I have a few things to get ironed out in the room its going in, but I'll probably start getting fish here soon to grow out. Trying to find a big tank in good shape with a decent size sump at the moment.

There are a good bit of big tanks out there, but not a lot of native types. I use to keep monster size fish, but now I've moved to stuff my family can enjoy along with everyone keeping their digits. It dawned on me last week fishing. I was catching basically the same freaking fish I was wanting, but now I don't have to deal with the headache of heating the water.
