Planning on taking a trip to Xenia OH to get some of the introduced N. Studfish there. I have read that they're pretty skidish and can be hard to catch. Just wondering if anyone has any tips on what works best for these or other Fundulus species. Anyone ever tried microfishing for them? Thanks.

Going to Massie's creek? Good creek for scarlet shiners as well. Studfish are tough to catch in open water. My best luck has been in shallow inlets and disconnected pools. You can find them from John Bryan all the way to South Lebanon, maybe farther downstream by now.

Chase the young ones (under 2") into a shallow place where you've got 'em cornered. Adult studfish ... well, catenatus & stellifer, I haven't encountered bifax in the wild yet ... are fast, wary, wily, and great jumpers. They're pretty hard to catch even with a seine. They'll dive deep and disappear before you get close. They'll jump over the seine. They've probably taken photos of my ineptness, and posted them to Facebook with some pointed commentary.

In addition to everything that Doug said, IME a 3rd person to work as a kicker/chaser has also been effective to catch studfish. It is hard to put into words just how "fast, wary, wily, and great jumpers" that they really are!

Thanks for all the input guys! Was planning on going and trying to get some and then updating this with how it went / any questions I may have, but unfortunately all the rain we've been getting here and then the tornadoes from Monday are really throwing a wrench in things! Hopefully we'll catch a break soon when I have a chance to go.
