Hi. I am new to native fish but have kept African cichlids for many years. I have a 75 gallon tank (48 x 18) and would like to stock it around Lepomis miniatus. Is this species kept best as an individual or in groups? If as an individual (not with other miniatus) could you give me some ideas on possible native tank mates? Does this fish prefer high or low flow? Any input at all welcome. Thanks!

I haven't kept sunfish, but there is a long write up in the stick post on Native fish Care sheets.  Scroll down a ways and you'll find it.

Come on!  Ask me some real questions!

When juveniles, best as groups. As adults I like to keep males singly and females can be kept in groups.  Mixed sex you can provide cover for females to hide behind or in.  I have kept them many times and they adapt well and breed easy.  Also, if not breeding, then more is better to control aggression issues.

Male only groups do well but you cannot have females of any sunfish species with them if conditions promote need to breed.

They go well with other sunfishes of similar size when males not breeding.  They do well with minnows of similar length or larger, especially if minnows in group of six or more.  I have kept them with a range of cichlids although not rock dwellers from African Rift Lakes.  One did well with a breeding group of Congo Tetras.

For some reason they are prone to eat rather large pieces of vegetation such as coontail.  The plant comes out largely intact so not likely for nutritional benefit.

I have had a bad day so let the loudness pass.
