Sample your ditch paying particular attention to the puddles.  Puddles not even 6" deep and 10 ft^2  can support a couple hundred greens even when water is nearly gravy with suspended solids during heat of summer.

Since you guys are still here I have another question lol. I caught another hybrid today and a 3" bluegill. All three are in my 29 gallon at the moment.

I ordered 4 sunfish from zimmerman but they'll be small (.75-1"). So once they come they are going straight into the 55 gallon and i need them to grow out until the hybrids can't eat them anymore and then they'll go together. (the hybrids with zimmermans sunfish)

How long can the 3 last in my 29 gallon without destroying each other? should i catch more smaller bluegills to help? The bluegills are not going to go in the 55 so they'll just go in a friend's pond after this is over. But will they he okfor a couple months as is or should i catch more?

I typed out my best answer then realized I misunderstood what was going on. Truth is I can't answer this, Centrarchid has more experience, so maybe he can. However my experience with tank raising sunfish is to be ready for the unexpected. As they mature, a hierarchy will develop. How much aggression shown can depend on the individuals. Not sure there is really a recipe for this. Play it by ear. Watch at feeding time. If one or two really shy away, make a change.

Is the 55 alive? If not I would put one of the three in there now to keep it so until you receive the fish from Brian. Then I would back the feed down on the larger fish and feed the newcomers heavily. Try whatever you need to get them close to the same size. If they are cool basement tanks, throw a heater in the 55 and raise the temp up a few degrees to speed up metabolism to boost the growth of the smaller fish.

Dither fish may help as you suggested.

Yes the 55 is alive right now! and it is heated so i do plan on trying to speed the growth on the small fish but it'll still be a while for that to happen. I guess i'll just see what happens! i'm excited :)

With the three larger fish in the 29-gal., two approached can be taken.  Lots of structure for hiding places and I mean lots, or a bare tank.  To help limit hostilities, lower temperatures as below 70 better and make so lights on 10 hours or less per day.  The latter efforts should suppress breeding mode.  Watch for ick when first dropping temperature.  I have been able to keep groups of three sunfish in smaller tanks for several months at a stretch.  You may need to play with feeding regimen to get so all happy.

The smaller sunfish, what species?  Regardless of species make so they have lots of cover.

Ok thanks for the tips! I'm going to just unplug my light all together and let the sun do the work. What's the best way to lower the temperature? it stays at about 73-75 depending on what my room is. Our house stays around 75 but my room has two walls facing outdoors so my room stays slightly cooler. This morning the original sunfish was seen attacking the new ones. It wasn't anything merciless it lasted about 2 mins and then he stopped.

Are you asking the small fish i ordered for zimmerman or the smaller on of the three I already have? The fish I ordered are longear and dollars. The smaller of the 3 is a bluegill (i'm not keeping him... ar least not planning on it) unless he can live happily in a 29.
